1 Stasi, Staatssicherheitsdienst
Stasi is the shortened nickname of the State Security Service, the much despised secret police and their agents in the former GDR. With the help of an extensive network of informers, the Stasi built up personal files on a third of the East German population. It was disbanded a year before the Wiedervereinigung. Since then there have been many charges concerning political crimes committed by Stasi agents, as well as enquiries into the number of former GDR citizens who co-operated with the Stasi. * * *The Stasi – short for Staatssicherheitsdienst – was the secret service of the former East Germany. The Ministerium für Staatssicherheit (or MfS) was established in 1950 and disbanded in 1989 before re-unification, as it was the most hated institution in the land and was regarded as the embodiment of a repressive regime. The Stasi built up a vast network of both full-time and unofficial collaborators (IMs), some of whom held prominent positions in West Germany.
